Safety Breakout: Efficient and Effective Implementation of a Food Fraud Prevention Strategy: Smarter, not Bigger

Food Fraud has become an urgent and critical food industry issue especially for the restaurant industry. An ongoing series of reports of seafood fraud and ingredients such as spices has led to increased risk of recalls or lack of consumer confidence. Current food safety management systems such as SQF, BRC, IFS, and FSSC 22000 are not requiring – not optional – to address food fraud. The compliance is based on the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarking and requirements including: (1) food fraud vulnerability assessment, (2) food fraud prevention strategy, and (3) and a process for ongoing management. This session will expand beyond just “what is food fraud” to “how to manage and implement food fraud prevention.” The presentation builds upon a wide range of Food Fraud Initiative resources such as primer documents, reference reports, and online training.
